Starting from the top
Have you ever wondered what Dyme Dividends are? How are they created? What do commissions have to do with it? This article explains what Dyme Dividends are. And why we’re so excited to be introducing Dyme as a platform to make every activity a climate positive activity
Sustainable Shopping and Sustainable Eating – Imagine you want to go out to have dinner, but you do not know where. You open your Instagram and find a nice restaurant review page. They always have some mouth-watering posts about new places in town. So, while swiping through the feed, you find that restaurant you always wanted to go to. And you make a note. After all, you can never remember the name of the restaurant when you’re hungry!
You walk into that restaurant and order the same dish the page recommended. And you have that wonderful meal you know you deserved. The restaurant asks you how you got to know them, so you mention the Instagram page. You pay $100 for the dinner and leave. The restaurant then pays $2.50 from your bill to the Instagram folks who referred you to them as a thank you. Thanks to that Instagram post, you had dinner there.
Now, what if that referral money (the $2.50) was used instead for a climate positive outcome? That’s Dyme Dividends!
You never pay extra. And we use our profits from the commissions brands pay us to invest directly in forestation and solar energy at schools and communities. Right here in America. That in turn reduces global warming. And earning Dyme Dividends when you dine is just the start – you can earn Dyme Dividends when shopping online or in-store, giving sustainable gift cards, using digital giftcards, and soon in many more ways! Just continue your regular shopping and gifting, but now contribute to our carbon reduction project.
How are Dyme Dividends created?
Whenever a Dyme member shops at a merchant that supports climate, the merchant pays Dyme a commission to say thank you. This commission (less our expenses and taxes) is what we invest in solar energy and forestation. And Dyme Dividends are the amount of CO2 reduced from those investments.
Solar energy is one of the best ways to reduce the amount of carbon that goes into the environment because you’re no longer using electricity generated by coal or gas plants. Obviously, not putting CO2 into the air is preferable to trying to remove it. But that’s hard to not have any CO2 at all entering the air, so we also invest in forestation as trees are the most effective way of removing CO2.
Every 100 Dyme Dividends your shopping funds is equal to 21.5 lb of CO2 reduced from the atmosphere. With every purchase, you are taking a step towards making the world a better place for future generations.
What you buy is important for the climate
Dyme Dividends help offset some of the carbon impact of what you bought, but what you buy is also as important. If not more important. According to a study from the Journal of Industrial Ecology, 60% of emissions come from household goods and services production. And the amount of household goods purchased is directly related to income. Americans produce three times more waste per capita than the global average, with each person disposing of 1,704 pounds per year of garbage. The world’s richest 1% are accountable for 15% of total emissions, while the 50% poorest account for only 7% of emissions. This means that top-income to a bottom-income person is 107 times the emissions. It also means the top-income person can have even greater impact by reducing their consumption.
The motto – reduce, reuse, recycle, buy with Dyme.
With Dyme, you can make a positive impact on the environment. And because paying it forward should never cost extra, Dyme rewards its members with discounts on your purchases. Helping reduce global warming can save you money!
You can make a difference in the world by making conscious choices and supporting sustainable brands that are environmentally responsible. And Dyme helps beyond reducing carbon emissions. Dyme Dividends also provide a tangible benefit to schools and communities. Additionally, providing solar power to communities can help to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, which can lead to cleaner air and a healthier environment.
