How these hotels were selected
Every hotel on this list had to clear two separate bars: a confirmed operational pool and verified sustainability credentials. Pool confirmation came from each hotel's own amenities page or direct property information. Sustainability credentials required either a third-party certification, such as LEED, Energy Star, or IHG Green Engage at Level 3 or above, or a published sustainability report containing specific numeric results tied to that property.
A brand pledge or a mission statement wasn't enough. If we couldn't tie a hotel to a measured result, it stayed off the list, whatever its star rating.
We started from the top-rated Boston hotels we work with. We left out several well-known luxury hotels because we couldn't confirm their pool or their sustainability credentials. Eco-friendly hotels with pools in Boston: what to expect from each tier
The two Tier 1 properties hold third-party credentials. Seaport Hotel® Boston holds four Green Keys from Green Key Global, and Boston Marriott Copley Place holds Energy Star, which means the EPA has confirmed the building's energy use intensity ranks in the top 25% of comparable properties.
Tier 2 properties, the InterContinental Boston by IHG, Hyatt Regency Boston, and The Westin Boston Seaport District, have published specific, numeric sustainability results at the property level. These properties have not yet obtained a formal third-party certification, but their reported data goes well beyond a brand pledge.
All five hotels have indoor pools. Pool hours and water temperature vary, so check with the hotel if the pool is a big part of your trip.
Tips for booking an eco hotel with a pool in Boston
- Ask the hotel directly whether the pool is heated year-round. Boston winters push outdoor pools out of service from October through April, and some indoor pools reduce hours during low-occupancy periods.
- ENERGY STAR certification is annual, so a building has to earn it again each year. If a credential matters to you, ask the hotel for its current status.
- The Seaport District has two hotels on this list within a 10-minute walk of each other. If one is sold out, try the other: both are on the Silver Line from South Station.
- Boston's MBTA Silver Line runs from South Station through the Seaport District and connects directly to Logan Airport at no extra fare. From the Seaport hotels you can get to the airport without a taxi or rideshare, and with a smaller carbon footprint.
