Move-in day always takes longer than anyone expects. By the time the boxes are up three flights of stairs and the bed is finally made, all you want is a quiet room ten minutes away.
That is what this is for. These are hotels near major college campuses, picked so the time you get with your kid goes on them rather than on parking and traffic.
We looked at 65 campuses and kept 100 hotels. Every one is within a mile and a half of the campus it serves, and 76 of those 100 hotels are inside a mile. A few are close enough to walk back to at lunchtime.
You will notice we give distances in miles rather than saying something is an eight minute walk. Travel times depend on which campus gate you are aiming for, and every automated source we tried gave a different answer each time we asked, so we give you the miles instead.
How We Built This Hotel Collection
We started with the campuses people actually travel to, weighted by how many students live there, how big the alumni base is and whether the town fills up on a home game weekend. Then we pulled every hotel around each one and cut the list down with three rules.
Within a mile and a half. Close enough that you are not planning the day around the car. Most are a good deal closer.
A quality floor. Four stars, or three and a half stars with a guest score of 8.0 or better. At some campuses nothing nearby meets it, so those campuses are not here.
Hotels on campus first. The hotels carrying a university's name are usually on or beside the grounds and easy to overlook when you are searching by town. 17 campuses below have one.
What we did not do is rank the campuses against each other. A hotel near Ole Miss is not competing with one near MIT, and pretending otherwise would make the order meaningless.

Cambridge and Boston pack four major universities within a few miles of each other, but New Haven and Hanover are long drives away, and fall weekends fill hotels fast.

When to Book Hotels Near College Campuses
Campus travel does not spread evenly through the year. Four dates do most of the damage to availability, and on all four the people competing with you for a room want exactly the same thing you do, which is to be near the same gate.
Move-in, late August. The tightest weekend of the year in a small college town. Rooms near campus go months ahead, and rates in places like State College and Ithaca move more than they do in a big city, because there is nowhere else to put people.
Family weekend, October. Usually paired with a home football game, which doubles the demand. Check the athletics calendar before the university calendar.
Homecoming and rivalry games, October and November. In SEC and Big Ten towns this is the real peak. Some hotels set minimum stays.
Commencement, May. The one date that cannot move and the one trip nobody skips. Book as soon as the date is published, which for most schools is the previous autumn.
