ANA bags, fees & check-in
What ANA actually gives you and charges you on US flights to Japan: the two free checked bags on transpacific routes, the carry-on weight limit, overweight and oversize fees, change rules and check-in deadlines. Plain numbers, stated assumptions, and a date you can trust.
Unless noted, the headline numbers are for US-to-Japan economy on the transpacific piece concept: two free checked bags, each up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and 158 linear cm (62 in). This is more generous than US carriers, which charge for the first bag. ANA's Asia and Europe routes use different weight rules, so confirm the allowance printed on your ticket.
Checked bag fees
For travel to and from North America, ANA uses the piece concept: your free allowance is counted in bags, not total kilos. Economy gets two free checked bags on transpacific routes, which is the main reason ANA's checked allowance beats most US airlines for a Japan trip. Each bag has its own weight and size cap. Note that ANA's flights within Asia and to Europe use weight-based rules instead, so this table applies to US routes.
| Cabin (US ⇄ Japan) | Free pieces | Per-piece weight | Max size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | 2 bags | 23 kg / 50 lbs | 158 cm / 62 in |
| Premium Economy | 2 bags | 23 kg / 50 lbs | 158 cm / 62 in |
| Business | 2 bags | 32 kg / 70 lbs | 158 cm / 62 in |
| First | 3 bags | 32 kg / 70 lbs | 158 cm / 62 in |
These figures are for travel between North America and Japan. Max size is the linear total: length + width + height. ANA Mileage Club elite tiers and Star Alliance Gold members get an extra free piece. Every fare on this route, including the cheapest economy, carries the full two-bag allowance: ANA has no reduced-bag basic economy on US routes.
On routes that touch Asia or Europe, ANA switches to a weight concept (a single total allowance in kg) rather than counting pieces. Confirm the allowance shown on your e-ticket for any itinerary that connects beyond Japan.
Carry-on & personal item
On international flights ANA allows one carry-on plus one personal item, and it enforces a combined cabin weight limit of 10 kg. The carry-on must fit the size cap including handles and wheels.
ANA's cabin allowance is the carry-on and the personal item together, not 10 kg each. Pack heavy items in your checked bags. A laptop, charger and water bottle add up faster than you'd expect against a 10 kg cap.
Overweight & oversize fees
These charges apply when a bag goes over the free weight or size cap on a North America route. ANA charges the higher of the overweight or oversize fee — not both — so a bag that triggers both conditions pays only the larger charge. Bags above the top tier are not accepted as standard checked luggage.
| Bag exceeds | Charge |
|---|---|
| Overweight 23–32 kg (51–70 lbs) | $60 |
| Overweight 32–45 kg (71–99 lbs) | $200 |
| Over 45 kg (99 lbs) | Not accepted |
| Oversize 158–292 cm (62–115 in) | $200 |
| Over 292 cm (115 in) | Not accepted |
Charges are typical published amounts for North America routes in USD. An extra bag beyond your free allowance on a transpacific route runs about $200. Confirm the exact figure for your itinerary at booking, since fees vary by route and direction.
Changes, cancellations & seats
ANA's change and cancel rules depend on the fare you bought. Flexible fares allow changes and refunds with little or no penalty; promotional and discounted fares can be non-refundable apart from taxes. The reissue service charge is waived when you make the change yourself on ana.com, so the online channel is the cheaper one.
| Action | Flexible fare | Discounted / promo fare |
|---|---|---|
| Change online (ana.com) | Service charge waived + fare diff. | Allowed if fare permits + fare diff. |
| Change by phone or counter | Set service charge per ticket | Set service charge per ticket |
| Cancel / refund | Refundable, may have a charge | Often taxes and surcharges only |
| No-show | Higher penalty or forfeit | Usually forfeit |
The cancellation charge after ticketing is the same whether you cancel early or late. Exact amounts are set by your ticket's fare rules, so check the conditions for your specific fare before you book.
Check-in & bag-drop deadlines
Get to the counter in time or ANA can refuse the bag or the boarding. These cutoffs apply at US airports whether or not you check a bag.
| Step | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Bag drop / counter check-in closes | 60 min before departure |
| Online check-in opens | 24 hours before departure |
| Boarding gate closes | About 15–20 min before departure |
Sixty minutes is the standard international cutoff at ANA's US gateways. Give yourself more time at busy airports and during peak season; security and immigration queues are not part of this window.
Onboard experience
ANA is a Skytrax 5-Star airline and has held that rating every year since 2013, the only Japanese carrier to do so. Here is what the cabin and service actually include on long-haul US flights.
Where ANA flies
ANA flies nonstop to Japan from eight US cities, splitting service between Tokyo's two airports: Haneda (HND), close to the city, and Narita (NRT). Most US gateways connect onward across ANA's large domestic and Asian network at Tokyo.
