British Airways bags, fees & check-in

What you'll actually face on a US-to-London British Airways flight: which economy fares include a checked bag, what it costs to add one, the generous cabin baggage allowance, change rules by fare, and check-in cutoffs at US airports. Plain numbers in dollars, stated assumptions, and a date you can trust.

Verified June 2026

Unless noted, figures are for economy on a US-to-London (transatlantic) route, per bag, added online before you fly. British Airways quotes fees in GBP; the USD amounts here are BA's published US-route equivalents. Add-a-bag prices vary by exact route, so confirm yours in Manage My Booking. Basic (hand-baggage-only) fares, fare brand, and Executive Club status change these numbers, and each is flagged below.

Checked bag fees

On US transatlantic routes, what you get depends on the fare you book, not just the cabin. Standard World Traveller economy includes one free checked bag. The cheapest fare, Basic, is hand baggage only with no checked bag at all, so adding one later costs more than buying a standard fare often would. Every checked bag must stay under 23 kg (51 lbs) and 90 x 75 x 43 cm (35 x 30 x 17 in) in economy.

Economy fare (US transatlantic)Free checked bagsAdd a bag (online)
Basic (hand baggage only)0~$70 first, ~$90 second
Standard (World Traveller)1 × 23 kg~$90 second bag
World Traveller Plus (prem. econ.)2 × 23 kg~$170 third bag
Club World (business)2 × 32 kgHigher allowance built in

Basic fares include no checked bag on any route, short-haul or long-haul. Add-a-bag fees are BA's US transatlantic economy figures and shift by route, so confirm yours in Manage My Booking or the BA baggage calculator. First class includes 3 × 32 kg. Adding a bag at the airport costs more than adding it online.

The cabin allowance is the same across every fare, including Basic, so a hand-baggage-only ticket still gets a full-size cabin bag plus a personal item (see below). The economy checked-bag weight limit is 23 kg (51 lbs); business and first allow 32 kg (70 lbs) per bag.

Carry-on & personal item

British Airways is generous on cabin baggage, and this is its real edge on Basic fares. Every fare, Basic included, comes with one full-size cabin bag plus one smaller under-seat item, both free.

Cabin bag
56 × 45 × 25 cm
Goes in the overhead locker. About 22 × 18 × 10 in, including handles and wheels. Weight up to 23 kg (51 lbs).

Personal item
40 × 30 × 15 cm
Fits under the seat in front. About 16 × 12 × 6 in, a handbag, backpack or laptop bag.
Free · All fares
Basic still gets the full cabin bag

Unlike US carriers' Basic Economy, BA's hand-baggage-only fare keeps the full-size cabin bag plus a personal item. If you can travel carry-on only, Basic is genuinely the cheap option. The trade-off is no checked bag and almost no flexibility, covered next.

Overweight & oversize fees

Heavy or large bags carry surcharges on top of any add-a-bag fee. Aim to stay under 23 kg in economy to avoid them entirely.

Bag exceedsCharge
23–32 kg (overweight, economy)$100 per bag
Over 32 kgNot accepted
Over 90 × 75 × 43 cm (oversize)Special handling, fee at airport
Over 190 × 75 × 65 cmNot accepted as checked baggage

BA's overweight fee is published as £65 / €75 / $100 / $100 CAD per bag per one-way journey. No single bag over 32 kg (70 lbs) is accepted in any cabin. Oversize items within the weight limit are handled separately and priced at the airport.

Basic Economy rules

BA's Basic fare is its hand-baggage-only economy ticket. It is the right pick only if you are not checking a bag and will not need to change your plans. Compare it against a standard fare before booking: once you add a bag and lose flexibility, standard often wins.

What you getBasic (hand baggage only)Standard economy
Cabin bag + personal itemFreeFree
Checked bagNot included1 × 23 kg free

Cabin baggage is identical across both, which is what makes Basic worth it for true carry-on trips. Add a checked bag on Basic and you pay roughly $70 each way, often more than the gap to a standard fare.

Changes, cancellations & seats

British Airways sells economy in fare brands, and flexibility rises with the brand. Basic is locked down. Plus allows changes for a fee plus any fare difference. Plus Flex allows free date changes and is refundable.

All bookings made directly with BA get a 24-hour free cancellation window. If BA cancels or makes a major schedule change, you are due a full refund regardless of fare brand under UK261 protections, separate from these voluntary-change rules. Fare-brand names and rules can vary by route and market.

Check-in & bag-drop deadlines

Miss these cutoffs and BA can refuse to check you in or board you. They apply whether or not you have a bag to drop. For US departures, plan to be at the airport early because passport and visa document checks happen before security.

StepDeadline
Online / app check-in opens24 hours before departure
Online check-in closes (US flights)2 hours before departure
Bag drop closes (long-haul, e.g. Heathrow)60 min before departure
Bag drop closes (short-haul / regional)45 min before departure
Bag drop opens (long-haul)About 3 hours before departure

Heathrow's general bag-drop deadline for long-haul is 60 minutes before departure. The exact cutoff can differ by airport, so check Manage My Booking. Boarding gates close before departure too, typically 20 minutes out, so being checked in is not the same as making the flight.

Onboard experience

BA flies its US routes on widebodies: the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 and 787. Long-haul economy is World Traveller, with World Traveller Plus premium economy above it and Club World (the new Club Suite) in business. What is on board depends on which aircraft and how far its refit has gone.

How to skip the fees

Travel carry-on only on a Basic fareBA's cabin allowance is the same on every fare, so if you can pack into the 56 × 45 × 25 cm cabin bag plus a personal item, Basic avoids the checked-bag fee entirely.
Add bags online, not at the airportAdding a checked bag in Manage My Booking before you fly is cheaper than paying at the desk. Run your route through the BA baggage calculator first.
Pick the right fare brand up frontOnce you add a checked bag and lose flexibility, a standard fare often costs less than Basic plus a bag. Compare the all-in price before you book.
Stay under 23 kg per bagThe economy weight limit is 23 kg. Going over triggers the $100 overweight charge, and nothing over 32 kg is accepted at all.
