Frontier Airlines bags, fees & check-in

Frontier is an ultra-low-cost carrier, so the headline fare is only the start. Here is what the add-ons actually cost: the paid carry-on, checked bags, seat selection, the fare bundles, change rules and the 60-minute check-in cutoff. Plain numbers, stated assumptions, and a date you can trust.

Verified June 2026

Unless noted, prices are for domestic U.S. travel, per bag, one way, bought online during booking. Frontier prices bags dynamically, so the figures below are typical ranges. The same bag bought later, or at the gate, costs more. International routes, promo fares and the FRONTIER World Mastercard change these numbers, and each is flagged below.

Checked bag fees

Frontier charges for every checked bag, and the price is dynamic: it varies by route, by travel date, and by when you buy it. The cheapest moment is during the initial booking. The most expensive is at the airport, where a single bag can more than double.

2nd checked bag$59–$86up to ~$99–$117

Standard checked allowance is up to 40 lbs and 62 linear inches (length + width + height). The Business bundle raises the limit to 50 lbs per bag. Ranges are typical Frontier pricing and move with route and date. Confirm yours in Frontier's bag price checker.

Bags must be added at least 60 minutes before departure. Add them during booking to lock the lowest price. Waiting until the airport is the costliest option Frontier offers.

Carry-on & personal item

This is the part that surprises people. Frontier charges for a full-size carry-on bag. The personal item is free. The carry-on is cheapest during booking and climbs sharply at the gate, so never plan to pay for it there.

Full-size carry-on
24 × 16 × 10″
Up to 35 lbs including handles and wheels. This is a paid add-on: roughly $29–$69 during booking, up to $99–$115 at the gate. Free inside the Economy, Premium and Business bundles.
Paid · ~$29–$69 online
Personal item
18 × 14 × 8″
Up to 35 lbs. Fits under the seat in front of you: a backpack, purse or small bag. Included free on every Frontier fare.

Buy the carry-on early, never at the gate

A carry-on added at the gate can cost more than three times the booking price. If you only need one bag in the cabin, compare the carry-on charge against a bundle. The bundle often costs the same or less and adds a seat and bag too.

Overweight & oversize fees

These surcharges stack on top of the standard checked bag price, so a heavy bag bought at the airport adds up fast. Bags above the top tier are not accepted.

Bag exceedsSurcharge (added)
41–50 lbs (overweight)+$75
51–99.99 lbs (overweight)+$129
Over 100 lbsNot accepted
63–110 linear inches (oversize)+$75
Over 110 linear inchesNot accepted

Surcharges are per bag, per direction. The 51–99.99 lb tier is $129 on bookings made on or after April 4, 2026 (it was $100 before). A bag that is both overweight and oversize can incur both charges.

Basic Economy rules

Frontier's cheapest fare is the stripped-down Basic fare. It buys you a seat and a free personal item, and almost nothing else. Everything else is à la carte. If you need a carry-on, a seat together, or any flexibility, price a bundle before you book Basic.

On a Basic fare with no paid seat, Frontier assigns you a seat at check-in, which can split a group up. The bundles fold the carry-on, seat and (on Business) bags into one price that usually beats buying them separately.

Changes, cancellations & seats

Frontier charges no change or cancellation fee on flights touched 7 or more days before departure. You still pay any difference in fare and options. Inside the 7-day window a fee applies, and the cheapest fares are the least flexible.

The no-fee window applies to all FRONTIER Miles status levels. Cancellations outside the 24-hour grace period are returned as travel credit, not cash. Always confirm the exact fee for your fare at the time you change it.

Check-in & bag-drop deadlines

Frontier's airport cutoffs are firm. Ticket counters and bag drop close 60 minutes before departure for domestic flights. Miss it and Frontier can deny boarding, even with a printed pass.

Bag drop / counter closes60 min (domestic)
International bag drop60 min (varies by airport)

Add bags at least 60 minutes before departure to avoid the airport price. Frontier charges nothing for online or app check-in. Confirm the cutoff for your specific airport, since a few international stations differ.

Onboard experience

Frontier is a no-frills cabin, and it is honest about that. Nothing is complimentary onboard, and the seats are basic. This is how the fares stay low.
