Hawaiian Airlines bags, fees & check-in

What you'll actually pay Hawaiian before you board. Bag fees split three ways here, interisland, mainland, and international, so the table you need depends on where you're flying. Plain numbers, stated assumptions, and a date you can trust.

Verified June 2026

Unless noted, prices are for the Main Cabin (economy), per bag, per person, each way. The headline figures below assume a mainland (Hawaii to North America) route. Interisland and international routes use different fees, shown in their own rows. Atmos Rewards status, the co-branded Mastercard, and the Main Cabin Basic fare change these numbers, and each is flagged below.

Checked bag fees

Hawaiian charges per checked bag, and the fee depends entirely on where you're flying. Interisland hops are the cheapest, mainland routes cost more, and long-haul international Main Cabin fares usually include two free bags. The fee is the same whether you prepay online or pay at the airport. First Class includes two free checked bags.

BagInterislandMainland (Hawaii ↔ N. America)
1st checked bag$30$45
2nd checked bag$40$55
3rd+ checked bag$50$200

Interisland means flights between the Hawaiian Islands (e.g. HNL to OGG); mainland means Hawaii to or from the U.S. mainland (e.g. HNL to LAX). Standard allowance is up to 50 lbs and 62 linear inches (length + width + height) per bag. Mainland first and second bag fees rose $5 and $10 on bookings from Apr 10, 2026. International routes are in the next tab.

Oceania (Sydney, Auckland)FreeFree$200
Tahiti / South PacificFreeFree$200

Most long-haul international Main Cabin fares include two free checked bags up to 50 lbs each. A third bag runs $200 (about ¥20,000 or ₩200,000 depending on where you buy it). Exact allowances vary by fare and route, so confirm your itinerary at booking. Main Cabin Basic fares can carry a checked-bag charge even on international routes.

Fees are charged per person, each way. The same fee structure applies on Hawaiian-branded flights now that Hawaiian and Alaska share one reservation system.

Carry-on & personal item

Every Hawaiian fare includes one free carry-on plus one free personal item. One detail trips travelers up: Hawaiian enforces a 25 lb weight limit on the carry-on, which many U.S. carriers don't. The bag must fit the sizer including handles and wheels.

Watch the 25 lb carry-on limit

Hawaiian is one of the few U.S. carriers that caps carry-on weight at 25 lbs, not just size. Pack the heavy items in your checked bag so your roller doesn't get gate-checked. Main Cabin Basic still includes the free carry-on, so this fare does not strip the overhead bag the way some rivals' basic fares do.

Overweight & oversize fees

These surcharges stack on top of the standard checked bag fee, so a heavy first bag on a mainland route can run well over $150. A bag that's both overweight and oversize can incur a combined charge.

Bag exceedsSurcharge (added)
51–70 lbs (overweight)+$100
71–100 lbs (overweight)+$200
Over 100 lbsNot accepted
63–115 linear inches (oversize)+$200
Over 115 linear inchesNot accepted

First Class and elite weight allowances reach 70 lbs before the overweight surcharge applies. Bags over 100 lbs or 115 linear inches aren't accepted as checked baggage. The figures above are for mainland (North America) routes. Interisland overweight fees are lower: +$35 for 51–70 lbs and +$70 for 71–100 lbs; the interisland oversize surcharge is +$35.

Basic Economy rules

Main Cabin Basic is Hawaiian's cheapest fare, its answer to basic economy. The good news: it keeps the free full-size carry-on. What you give up is flexibility and seat choice. Main Cabin Basic can't be changed at all after the 24-hour booking window, and it earns no travel credit if you cancel later.

Main Cabin Basic seats are assigned automatically unless you pay for advance selection. Outside the 24-hour booking window the fare can't be changed or refunded, and no credit is offered if you cancel.

Changes, cancellations & seats

Hawaiian charges no change fee on Main Cabin, Extra Comfort and First Class. You pay only the fare difference. Main Cabin Basic is the carve-out: it can't be changed at all after the 24-hour window.

Check-in & bag-drop deadlines

Miss these cutoffs and Hawaiian can deny boarding. They apply whether or not you're checking a bag, and interisland is the tightest because the hops are short. Build in customs time for international.

Flight typeCheck-in / bag-drop by
Interisland (between Islands)30 min before departure
Mainland (Hawaii ↔ N. America)45 min before departure
International60 min before departure

Online and app check-in opens 24 hours before departure. Hawaiian suggests arriving about 90 minutes early for interisland, 2.5 hours for mainland, and 3 hours for international to clear bag drop and security in time.

How to skip the fees

Carry the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite MastercardThe co-branded Mastercard gives the primary cardholder two free checked bags on eligible Hawaiian and Alaska flights paid for with the card, plus an annual companion discount.
Hold Atmos Rewards elite statusElite members get free checked bags and a higher weight allowance before the overweight surcharges apply.
Fly long-haul international in Main CabinMost international Main Cabin fares already include two free checked bags, so you only pay from the third bag.
Stay under 25 lbs on the carry-on and 50 lbs checkedKeeping the carry-on under 25 lbs avoids a gate-check, and staying under 50 lbs and 62 linear inches avoids the +$100 to +$200 surcharges entirely.

Hawaiian baggage FAQ

How much is a checked bag on Hawaiian Airlines?
It depends on the route. Interisland flights are $30 for the first bag and $40 for the second. Mainland flights (Hawaii to North America) are $45 for the first and $55 for the second, each way per person. Most international Main Cabin fares include two free checked bags, with the third at $200.
Are checked bags free on Hawaiian's international flights?
Usually yes. Most long-haul international Main Cabin fares to Asia and Oceania include two free checked bags up to 50 lbs each. A third bag runs $200. Exact allowances vary by fare and route, and Main Cabin Basic can carry a charge, so confirm at booking.
What is Hawaiian's carry-on weight limit?
Hawaiian caps the carry-on at 25 lbs in addition to the 22 x 14 x 9 inch size limit, which is stricter than most U.S. carriers. Pack heavy items in your checked bag so the roller isn't gate-checked. Every fare, including Main Cabin Basic, includes the free carry-on plus a personal item.
Does Hawaiian Airlines charge change fees?
No change fee on Main Cabin, Extra Comfort and First Class. You pay only the fare difference. Main Cabin Basic is the exception: it can't be changed at all after the 24-hour booking window, and it isn't refundable for credit.
Are Hawaiian and Alaska merged now?
Operationally, yes. They received a single FAA operating certificate in late 2025 and moved to one shared reservation system in April 2026, so flights carry the AS code. Both brands still fly, and you can still book at hawaiianairlines.com or alaskaair.com. Loyalty is now Atmos Rewards, which replaced HawaiianMiles.
How early do I have to check in for a Hawaiian flight?
At least 30 minutes before an interisland departure, 45 minutes for a mainland flight, and 60 minutes for an international flight, for check-in and bag drop. Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure.
