JetBlue bags, fees & check-in
What you'll actually pay JetBlue before you board: checked and carry-on bags, the peak-vs-off-peak bag pricing, Blue Basic rules, change and cancel fees, and check-in deadlines. Plain numbers, stated assumptions, and a date you can trust.
Unless noted, prices are for domestic and Caribbean/Latin America economy, per bag, prepaid online 24h+ before departure on an off-peak travel date. Both first and second bags cost more on peak travel dates and more when added within 24 hours or at the airport, roughly $10 each per step. Mosaic status, the JetBlue co-branded Barclays card, your fare brand, and transatlantic routes change these numbers, and each is flagged below.
Checked bag fees
JetBlue prices checked bags on two axes. The base fee depends on whether your travel date is peak or off-peak, and you save about $10 per bag by adding it online at least 24 hours before departure instead of within 24 hours or at the airport. Peak dates cover roughly half the year, most of summer, spring break, Thanksgiving, and the winter holidays.
| Bag | Off-peak (online 24h+) | Peak (online 24h+) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st checked bag | $39 | $49 |
| 2nd checked bag | $59 | $69 |
| 3rd+ checked bag | $200 | $200 |
Add a bag within 24 hours of departure or at the airport and it's about $10 more per bag than the prices shown (e.g. a peak first bag at the airport runs ~$59). Blue Plus and Mint fares, Mosaic members, and qualifying JetBlue cardholders skip these fees (see below).
Standard allowance applies up to 50 lbs and 62 linear inches (length + width + height). Heavier or larger bags add the surcharges in the next section.
Carry-on & personal item
JetBlue's standard fares (Blue and above) include one free full-size carry-on plus one free personal item. Blue Basic is the exception: on domestic routes it is limited to a personal item only — the overhead carry-on is not included unless you purchase an EvenMore Space seat. On transatlantic (London/Europe) routes, Blue Basic does include a carry-on.
On domestic routes, Blue Basic passengers are limited to a personal item under the seat — the overhead carry-on is not included. You can still bring a standard-size carry-on if you purchase an EvenMore Space seat. Blue Basic does include a carry-on on transatlantic flights to London and Europe.
Overweight & oversize fees
These surcharges are flat fees on top of the standard checked bag price, and a bag that's both overweight and oversize gets hit with both. Bags past the top tier aren't accepted.
| Bag exceeds | Surcharge (added) |
|---|---|
| 51–99 lbs (overweight) | +$150 |
| Over 99 lbs | Not accepted |
| 63–80 linear inches (oversize) | +$150 |
| Over 80 linear inches | Not accepted |
A bag both overweight and oversize incurs both surcharges (up to +$300). On transatlantic routes the weight ceiling drops: bags over 70 lbs aren't accepted at all.
Basic Economy rules
Blue Basic is JetBlue's cheapest fare. It keeps the free carry-on but gives up flexibility, seat choice, and boarding order. If you'd check a bag or want to pick your seat, compare it carefully against a standard Blue fare.
| What you get | Blue Basic | Blue (standard) |
|---|---|---|
| Personal item | Free | Free |
| Full-size carry-on (domestic) | Not included* | Free |
| Checked bag | Paid | Paid |
| Advance seat selection | Paid | Paid (some free) |
| Flight changes | Not allowed* | No change fee |
| Boarding | Last group | Standard |
*Blue Basic on domestic routes is limited to a personal item only — no overhead carry-on unless you purchase EvenMore Space. On transatlantic routes (London/Europe) a carry-on is included. Blue Basic fares can't be changed; they can be cancelled for up to a $200 fee, then rebooked at the current fare. Mosaic members get free same-day switches even on Blue Basic. Blue Plus adds a free checked bag; Blue Extra adds free same-day switches and earlier boarding.
Changes, cancellations & seats
JetBlue charges no change or cancellation fee on most fares. You pay only the fare difference. Blue Basic is the carve-out: it can't be changed, only cancelled for a fee.
| Action | Blue / Blue Plus / Blue Extra / Mint | Blue Basic |
|---|---|---|
| Change fee | $0 + fare diff. | Not allowed |
| Cancel fee | $0 (travel credit) | Up to $200 (travel credit, minus fee) |
| Same-day switch | $75 (free for Mosaic) | Not eligible |
| Same-day standby | $75 (free for Mosaic) | Not eligible |
No change or cancel fee on Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra, EvenMore and Mint. Cancellations return the value as a JetBlue travel credit (refundability depends on the fare). Blue Basic's cancel fee is up to $200 per person (per JetBlue Contract of Carriage, Revision 102, effective Jun 2026); after cancelling you rebook at the current price.
Check-in & bag-drop deadlines
Miss these cutoffs and JetBlue can deny boarding. They apply whether or not you're checking a bag.
| Flight type | Check-in / bag-drop by |
|---|---|
| Domestic (U.S.) | 45 min before departure |
| International | 60 min before departure |
| Boarding closes (domestic) | 15 min before departure |
| Boarding closes (international) | 20 min before departure |
Online and app check-in opens 24 hours before departure. Arrive earlier than the cutoff at busy hubs like JFK or BOS. Bag-drop lines can run 15–30 minutes. International travelers must also check in during the airport's customs hours.
Onboard experience
This is JetBlue's calling card. Free fast Wi-Fi on every plane, a free seatback screen at every seat, and free snacks and soft drinks come standard on every fare, not paid add-ons. Mint is the lie-flat premium cabin on select long routes.
| Cabin | What's notable |
|---|---|
| Core (economy) | JetBlue's roomy standard seat with a free seatback screen, free Wi-Fi, free snacks and soft drinks. |
| EvenMore | Extra legroom, early boarding, and an early security lane where offered. Paid upgrade. |
| Mint (business) | Lie-flat seats up to ~6'8", private suites on some jets, upgraded dining. Select transcon and international routes. |
Mint availability is route-specific (transcontinental and select international). In 2026 JetBlue began rolling out a domestic first-class product across more of the fleet.
Where JetBlue Airways flies
JetBlue runs hub-style operations at JFK and Boston plus four focus cities, with a growing transatlantic map to London and Europe. Most itineraries route through one of these.
