KLM bags, fees & check-in

What you'll actually pay KLM before you board a US-to-Amsterdam flight: checked and carry-on bags by fare brand, weight and size limits, Economy Light rules, change fees and check-in deadlines. Plain numbers, stated assumptions, and a date you can trust.

Verified June 2026

Unless noted, figures are for economy on US–Amsterdam (transatlantic) routes, per bag, and reflect KLM's fare-brand rules. Your checked allowance depends on which fare you book (Economy Light, Standard or Flex), not the route. Extra-bag fees are charged in USD for US-origin flights and are cheaper bought online than at the airport. Flying Blue status and Premium Comfort or Business cabins change these numbers.

Checked bag fees

KLM ties your free checked allowance to the fare brand you book, not the route. On transatlantic flights, Economy Light is carry-on only with no free checked bag, while Economy Standard and Economy Flex each include one. Adding a bag online is cheaper than paying at the airport.

Economy fare brandFree checked bagsAdd a bag (US route)
Economy LightNone (carry-on only)~$75–$120
Economy Standard1 bag (up to 23 kg)~$75–$120 for a 2nd
Economy Flex1 bag (up to 23 kg)~$75–$120 for a 2nd
Premium Comfort2 bags (up to 23 kg each)Route-priced 3rd

Included bags are up to 23 kg (50 lbs) and 158 linear cm (62 in), length plus width plus height. Add-a-bag pricing varies by route and is shown in My Trip after booking; the ~$75–$120 band reflects published US transatlantic pricing. Heavier or larger bags add the surcharges in the next section.

This table covers economy on US-originating transatlantic routes. Intra-Europe fares use the same brand structure with lower add-a-bag fees. Always confirm your itinerary's allowance at booking, since fare conditions can differ by flight.

Carry-on & personal item

Every economy fare, including Economy Light, includes one carry-on plus one personal item. KLM enforces a combined cabin-baggage weight limit, so a heavy carry-on can be checked at the gate.

Watch the cabin weight limit

KLM caps economy cabin baggage at 12 kg (about 26 lbs) combined for the carry-on and personal item. Premium Comfort and Business allow more. Overweight cabin bags can be sent to the hold at the gate, so weigh before you go.

Overweight & oversize fees

These surcharges apply when a checked bag is heavier or larger than the standard allowance. They are separate from the add-a-bag fee, so an extra overweight bag can stack both charges.

Bag exceedsSurcharge (US/Europe routes)
Over 23 kg / 50 lbs (overweight)~$85–$300
Over 158 cm / 62 in (oversize)~$250–$310
Over 32 kg / 70 lbsNot accepted as checked baggage

The overweight band ($85–$300) reflects KLM's published North America to Europe surcharges; the wide range reflects route-based pricing. The oversize band is an indicative range — confirm in My Trip for your route. A single checked bag over 32 kg is not accepted and must be shipped as cargo. Sports and musical equipment have their own rules.

Basic Economy rules

Economy Light is KLM's lowest economy fare and works much like basic economy elsewhere: a cheap headline price that gives up the free checked bag and most flexibility. You keep the carry-on and personal item.

Seat selectionPaidPaid (standard); free at check-in
Flight changePaid (intercontinental); fare diff.Paid, lower fee + fare diff.
RefundableNoNo

On intercontinental routes, an Economy Light ticket can be changed for a fee plus fare difference. On short-haul European routes, Light changes are not allowed. Economy Flex is the flexible fare: free changes and a refundable ticket.

Changes, cancellations & seats

KLM's change and refund rules follow the fare brand. Economy Light is the most restrictive, Economy Flex is the most flexible. All economy fares qualify for the US 24-hour free-cancellation window when booked at least 7 days before departure.

Fare brandChange feeRefundable
Economy Light~$220 + fare diff. (intercontinental); no change short-haulNo
Economy Standard~$220 + fare diff. (intercontinental); ~$75 + fare diff. (intra-Europe)No
Economy FlexFree + fare diff.Yes

On intercontinental routes, Economy Light and Standard both carry a ~$220 change fee plus any fare difference. The ~$75 Standard fee applies only on intra-Europe flights. Economy Flex waives the fee on all routes. A fare difference may apply on top of any change fee. Refunds on non-refundable fares are limited to unused taxes and charges.

Check-in & bag-drop deadlines

Miss these cutoffs and KLM can refuse to check you or your bag in. They apply whether or not you're checking a bag. For US departures, plan to be at the airport well ahead of these times.

Departure typeCheck-in / bag-drop by
From the United States (intercontinental)60 min before departure
Amsterdam Schiphol (intercontinental)60 min before departure
Within Europe40 min before departure

Online check-in opens about 30 hours before departure on most routes; for flights to and from the United States, it opens 24 hours before departure. KLM recommends arriving at Schiphol roughly 3 hours before an intercontinental flight, and US airports often need extra time for security. The exact bag-drop closing time is printed on your boarding pass.

How to skip the fees

Match the fare brand to your bagsIf you need to check a bag, Economy Standard usually beats Economy Light plus a paid bag. Light only wins if you truly travel carry-on only.
Add bags online, not at the airportBuying extra baggage in My Trip before you fly is cheaper than at the check-in desk, often by around 20 percent.
Weigh your cabin bagsKLM caps economy cabin baggage at 12 kg combined. Staying under it avoids a forced gate check, and staying under 23 kg per checked bag avoids the overweight surcharge.
