Singapore Airlines bags, fees & check-in

What Singapore Airlines actually includes when you fly the US to Singapore: checked and carry-on baggage, how Economy Lite, Standard and Flexi differ, excess-bag and change fees, and US check-in deadlines. Plain numbers, stated assumptions, and a date you can trust.

Unless noted, allowances are for US-originating Economy travel to Singapore. On US and Canada routes Singapore Airlines uses a piece concept: bags are counted by number, each up to a weight cap, not by total weight. Most other routes use a weight concept where the kilogram allowance changes by fare type. Both are spelled out below.

Checked bag fees

On flights between the US and Singapore, Singapore Airlines includes checked baggage in every Economy fare, including Economy Lite. The US allowance is counted by the piece, so Economy Lite, Standard and Flexi all get the same two checked bags. The fare type changes the kilogram allowance only on weight-concept routes outside the US and Canada.

Cabin (US routes)Pieces includedWeight per bag
Economy (Lite / Standard / Flexi)2 bagsUp to 23 kg / 50 lb
Premium Economy2 bagsUp to 23 kg / 50 lb
Business2 bagsUp to 32 kg / 70 lb
First / Suites2 bagsUp to 32 kg / 70 lb

US and Canada routes use the piece concept, so all three Economy fare types share the same two-bag allowance. The difference between Lite, Standard and Flexi shows up on weight-concept routes (see the next section) and in change and seat rules below. Each bag must stay within 158 cm / 62 in total dimensions.

On weight-concept routes (most destinations outside the US and Canada) the Economy kilogram allowance varies by fare: Economy Lite ~25 kg, Economy Standard ~30 kg, Economy Flexi ~30 kg. Premium Economy carries 35 kg, Business and Suites carry more. If your trip connects beyond Singapore on a weight-concept leg, check the allowance for that fare and route at booking.

Carry-on & personal item

Every Singapore Airlines fare, including Economy Lite, includes cabin baggage. Economy and Premium Economy get one cabin bag plus one personal item. Business, First and Suites get two cabin bags.

The 7 kg cabin limit is enforced

Singapore Airlines weighs cabin bags, and the 7 kg ceiling in Economy and Premium Economy is firmer than at many US carriers. A personal item over 80 cm total dimensions counts as your cabin bag, so pack the small item small.

Overweight & oversize fees

Excess and overweight charges stack on top of your included allowance. On US routes the cheapest way to add weight or a bag is to pre-purchase online before you reach the airport. Buying at the counter costs more.

Ranges depend on the exact routing and are taken from published US-route excess-baggage charges. A single bag may not exceed 32 kg / 70 lb; heavier bags must be repacked. Pre-purchase generally closes a few hours before departure, so add weight early.

Basic Economy rules

Economy Lite is Singapore Airlines' entry fare. It still includes the full US checked-bag allowance and a cabin bag, which is more generous than US carriers' basic fares, but it locks down changes, refunds and seat choice.

All three Economy fares include the same two checked bags on US routes. The price difference buys flexibility: Flexi changes and refunds, Standard mid-tier rules, Lite the most restrictive.

Changes, cancellations & seats

Singapore Airlines sets change and refund rules by fare type, not by route. Economy Lite is the most restrictive. Economy Flexi is the most forgiving. The exact change fee depends on the fare and is collected in the currency of issue, so treat the figures below as the rule, not a quote.

Change and cancellation fees were revised in April 2026 and vary by fare and itinerary. Confirm the exact amount for your booking before you change it. Flexi carries the highest cancellation fee but is the only Economy fare that refunds.

Check-in & bag-drop deadlines

Singapore Airlines flies long-haul from the US, so plan for a full international check-in. Counters open about three hours before departure, and the airline recommends arriving three hours early when you have bags.

StepTiming
Bag-drop / counters openAbout 3 hours before departure
Check-in counters close40 min before departure
Recommended arrival (US airports)3 hours before departure
Online check-in opens48 hours before departure

At US gateways such as JFK, EWR, LAX, SFO and SEA, baggage drop does not open earlier than about three hours out. The 40-minute counter close is firm; miss it and you can be denied boarding even with a valid ticket.

Onboard experience

Service is the reason most travelers pick Singapore Airlines. It holds a Skytrax 5-Star rating, and every fare on the US routes includes meals, drinks and seatback entertainment. Most US gateways (LAX, SFO, SEA) operate on the standard long-range A350-900 with Economy, Premium Economy and Business. The nonstop New York flights (JFK and EWR) use the A350-900ULR, which carries only Business and Premium Economy — Economy passengers on the New York–Singapore pair connect via a codeshare or a one-stop itinerary.

Singapore baggage FAQ

How many checked bags do I get on Singapore Airlines from the US?
On US and Canada routes, Economy and Premium Economy each include two checked bags up to 23 kg (50 lb) per bag, and Business, First and Suites include two bags up to 32 kg (70 lb). The allowance is the same across Economy Lite, Standard and Flexi because US routes are counted by the piece.
Does Economy Lite include a checked bag?
Yes. Singapore Airlines is a full-service airline, so Economy Lite still includes the full US checked-bag allowance and a cabin bag. What Lite gives up is flexibility: it is non-refundable, charges a fee to change dates, and limits seat selection.
What is the carry-on limit on Singapore Airlines?
Economy and Premium Economy get one cabin bag up to 7 kg, with total dimensions of 115 cm (about 56 × 36 × 23 cm), plus one personal item up to 40 × 30 × 10 cm. The 7 kg limit is weighed and enforced.
Is Wi-Fi free on Singapore Airlines?
Yes for KrisFlyer members on most flights, including Economy and Premium Economy, with one connected device. Joining KrisFlyer is free and you can sign up in the air. Non-members can buy a pass from about US$3.99 per hour.
How early should I check in for a Singapore Airlines flight from the US?
Counters open about three hours before departure and close 40 minutes before. Singapore Airlines recommends arriving three hours early at US gateways like JFK, EWR, LAX, SFO and SEA, since these are long-haul international departures.
