Golden Gate Park stretches for more than 1,000 acres across western San Francisco and is home to major attractions including the de Young Museum, California Academy of Sciences, Japanese Tea Garden, and Stow Lake. Stanyan Park Hotel is the one to book if you can: it's directly across the street from the park's main eastern entrance. The other four are a 5- to 15-minute walk from the park's edge, and each has a bus or Muni Metro stop a few minutes from the door.
How this list was built
We picked hotels for how close they are on foot to Golden Gate Park, compared them on walking distance and star rating, and favored the ones with an easy route to the park's big attractions, including the de Young Museum, California Academy of Sciences, and Japanese Tea Garden.
We measured each walk along the streets to the nearest edge of the park. For The Metro Hotel and The Grove Inn, that's the Panhandle, the narrow strip of Golden Gate Park between Fell and Oak Streets that runs east from Stanyan Street to Baker Street. Stanyan Park Hotel is in Haight-Ashbury, The SeaScape Inn is a block from the park's ocean end, and Sunset Edwardian Bed and Breakfast is in the Inner Sunset, south of the park.

What to do once you reach Golden Gate Park
Most of the big attractions are in the eastern third of the park. The California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum face each other across the Music Concourse, and both are a 15-minute walk from Stanyan Street. The Japanese Tea Garden is directly adjacent to the de Young and charges admission, with a free hour from 9 to 10 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Stow Lake, roughly in the park's center, rents rowboats and pedal boats by the hour. Spreckels Lake, further west, draws model-boat enthusiasts on weekend mornings. The western end of the park opens onto Ocean Beach, where water temperatures average 55°F year-round and strong rip currents make swimming inadvisable for most visitors.
The park's free attractions include Bison Paddock (yes, there are real bison), the Dutch Windmill near the ocean, and the Chain of Lakes trail system. Golden Gate Park Bike and Skate, near Stanyan Street, rents bicycles, inline skates, and Surrey bikes for exploring the car-free JFK Promenade.
