Montreal or Québec City Christmas markets 2026: which to pick

The short answer (updated October 2026): pick Québec City if you want the classic, European-style market. It fills five squares and streets in and around Old Québec from November 19 to December 23, 2026, and it opens Thursday to Sunday until the final week.

Pick Montreal if your dates are flexible or fall after Christmas. Its Great Christmas Market runs from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027, and opens every day from December 16. Both are free to walk into.

The two cities are an easy train ride apart, so you don't have to choose. You do have to time it, because the two markets keep different days. Here are the dates, the hours, the hotels closest to each market, and how to fit both into one trip.

Québec City German Christmas Market 2026

The Québec City German Christmas Market (Marché de Noël allemand) runs from Thursday, November 19 to Wednesday, December 23, 2026. It's run by the German community of Québec, and it takes over the streets and squares around City Hall in Old Québec.

It opens Thursday to Sunday each week, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with Sundays closing at 6 p.m. The last week is different. From Thursday, December 17 it's open every day through the 23rd, until 9 p.m. each night, including Sunday the 20th. The final day closes at 8 p.m. The full schedule is on the German Christmas Market's official opening hours page.

The market is split across five sites, each with a German name:

  • Rathausgarten: the City Hall gardens (Jardins de l'Hôtel-de-Ville).
  • Marktplatz: Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, in front of City Hall.
  • Kirchgasse: the courtyard of the Holy Trinity Cathedral and Sainte-Anne Street.
  • Weihnachtsschloss (Christmas Castle): Place d'Armes, beside the Château Frontenac.
  • Bergdorf (Alpine Village): Place D'Youville, just outside the Saint-Jean Gate.

Getting there and practical tips

All five are within about a 10-minute walk of each other. Entry is free, and most stalls take cards, but bring some cash in case. For a sit-down bite, the Aux Traditions d'Alsace counter serves Alsatian food. Weekends get crowded, so come on a Thursday or Friday if you can.

The easiest way in is the bus. RTC route 11 stops in front of City Hall, and routes 800, 801 and 807 run to Place D'Youville. If you drive, there's underground parking beneath City Hall and at Place D'Youville.

If the weather turns, there's an indoor option. The Grand Marché de Québec holds its own Christmas market from November 21 to December 24, 2026, with about 100 local producers and artisans, at 250-M Boulevard Wilfrid-Hamel, a short drive outside the walls.

Where to stay for the Québec City Christmas market

In Québec City you either stay inside the walls or below them. Old Québec puts you a few minutes' walk from every market site, and it costs more. Lower Town and Saint-Roch are cheaper, but the market is at the top of a steep hill, and on an icy December evening that climb is real.

When we checked mid-December rates on October 27, 2026, only one Old Québec hotel gave us a Thursday rate, at about CA$485 a night, and none gave us a Saturday rate. Saint-Roch ran about CA$240 to CA$440. Book Old Québec early, especially for a weekend.

Inside the walls (Old Québec)

  • Hotel Clarendon, 57 Rue Sainte-Anne. About a minute's walk from City Hall and the Rathausgarten. It scores 9.0 from more than 2,700 guest reviews.
  • Monsieur Jean, Hôtel Particulier, 2 Rue Pierre-Olivier-Chauveau. Also about a minute from City Hall, with a 9.3 guest score.
  • Hôtel Sainte-Anne, 32 Rue Sainte-Anne. On the market's Kirchgasse street, two minutes from City Hall, and the lowest price inside the walls in our check.
  • Want the Christmas Castle outside your door? Auberge Place d'Armes, at 24 Rue Sainte-Anne, is on Place d'Armes.
  • Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, 1 Rue des Carrières. The splurge, about five minutes from City Hall. Book early, because availability was thin when we checked.

Below the walls (Lower Town and Saint-Roch)

  • Hotel Le Priori, 15 Rue Sault-au-Matelot. In the Old Port, with a 9.6 guest score. The market is close on a map, but you climb the cliff to reach it, by Côte de la Montagne, the stairs or the funicular.
  • Hotel PUR, 395 Rue de la Couronne. In Saint-Roch, where rooms cost less. Allow 20 to 25 minutes to walk up to City Hall, mostly uphill, or take a short cab ride.

Montreal Christmas markets 2026

Montreal has two markets worth planning around: the big one downtown and a smaller one by the Lachine Canal.

The Great Christmas Market (Grand Marché de Noël)

The Great Christmas Market runs from Friday, November 13, 2026 to Sunday, January 3, 2027, at 1499 Jeanne-Mance Street in the Quartier des Spectacles. It's on Sainte-Catherine Street between Balmoral and Jeanne-Mance, and the closest metro stations are Place-des-Arts and Saint-Laurent.

Until December 13, it opens Wednesday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in that stretch. From December 16 it opens every day from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., and it opens early, at 11 a.m., from December 21 to 23. On December 24 and 25 it's open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Check the Great Christmas Market's official visitor page before you go.

Expect 40 chalets of local and regional artisans, another 50 or so exhibitors from across Quebec, mulled wine, and more than 150 free shows and activities. Entry is free and leashed dogs are welcome. The nearest washrooms are on the lower floor of Complexe Desjardins, across the street.

The Montreal Christmas Village at Atwater Market

The Christmas Village (Village de Noël) runs from November 26 to December 24, 2026, at Atwater Market, on the corner of Saint-Ambroise Street and Atwater Avenue, next to the Christmas tree sellers. It's smaller and more of a neighborhood market. Until December 20 it opens on Friday evenings and during the day on weekends, then every day from December 21 to 24, closing at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Check the exact hours on the Christmas Village website. The nearest metro is Lionel-Groulx.

Where to stay for the Montreal Christmas market

Downtown has plenty of hotels within a 12-minute walk of the Great Christmas Market. When we checked mid-December rates on October 27, 2026, hotels within about 12 minutes' walk ranged from about CA$160 to CA$540 a night, and about half were between CA$250 and CA$370.

  • HONEYROSE Hotel, 355 Boulevard De Maisonneuve West. The closest, about two minutes on foot, with a 9.4 guest score.
  • If you'd rather spend as little time in the cold as possible, DoubleTree by Hilton Montreal, at 1255 Jeanne-Mance Street, is part of Complexe Desjardins, across the street from the market.
  • Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Centre-Ville, 380 Sherbrooke Street West. About five minutes away, and one of the lower rates near the market in our check.
  • Hôtel Birks Montréal, 1240 Square-Phillips Street. The five-star option, about six minutes' walk.
  • Le Dauphin Montréal Centre-Ville, 1025 De Bleury Street. About nine minutes away, with a 9.0 score from almost 4,500 reviews.
  • Manoir Sherbrooke, 157 Sherbrooke Street East. About 12 minutes on foot, with a 9.4 guest score from more than 6,000 reviews, and the lowest rate near the market in our check.

For the Christmas Village, there are no hotels right beside Atwater Market. Le Nouvel Hotel, at 1740 René-Lévesque Boulevard West, is the closest, about a 20-minute walk or a short metro ride away, and it was the cheapest hotel in our Montreal check.

Doing both markets in one trip

VIA Rail runs about five trains a day each way between Montreal Central Station and Québec City's Gare du Palais, and the trip takes about three and a quarter to three and a half hours. Gare du Palais is in Lower Town, so it's a short cab ride or a steep walk up to the market. Times and fares are on VIA Rail's Montreal to Québec City page.

The catch is the opening days. Before mid-December, Québec City opens Thursday to Sunday and Montreal opens Wednesday to Sunday, and both close on Monday and Tuesday. So a long weekend in Québec City followed by Montreal on Monday finds the Montreal market shut.

A plan that works: start in Montreal on a Wednesday, when the market opens at 3 p.m., take a morning train to Québec City on Thursday, and spend Thursday to Sunday there. From December 16 the problem goes away, because Montreal opens every day and Québec City opens daily from the 17th.

Visiting between Christmas and New Year

If you're traveling between December 24 and January 3, go to Montreal. Québec City's German Christmas Market closes on December 23, and its indoor Grand Marché market closes a day later. Montreal's Christmas Village at Atwater closes on Christmas Eve too.

The Great Christmas Market in the Quartier des Spectacles is the one that stays open. It keeps shorter hours on December 24 and 25, then opens every afternoon and evening until January 3. Check the official page for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day hours.

Old Québec has a holiday festival after Christmas, Kaléidoscopes, from December 27 to 31, but it isn't a Christmas market.

Frequently asked questions

Which Christmas market is better, Montreal or Québec City?+

Québec City's German Christmas Market is the more traditional one, spread across five sites in and around Old Québec. Montreal's Great Christmas Market has the longer season: it runs to January 3, 2027 and opens every day from December 16. Pick Québec City for a weekend before December 23, and Montreal if you're traveling after Christmas.

Is it worth going to Quebec City for Christmas?+

Yes, if you go before December 24. The German Christmas Market runs from November 19 to December 23, 2026, and all five market sites are within about a 10-minute walk of each other. Between December 27 and 31 Old Québec has the Kaléidoscopes holiday festival instead.

Is Quebec nice during Christmas?+

Yes. From November 19 to December 23 the German Christmas Market fills the area around City Hall and Place d'Armes. Dress for real winter cold, and book hotels inside the walls early, especially for Saturday nights.

What is Christmas like in Montreal?+

Montreal's main Christmas event is the Great Christmas Market in the Quartier des Spectacles, with 40 artisan chalets, around 50 more exhibitors, mulled wine and more than 150 free shows. It's open every day from December 16 to January 3, 2027. There's also a smaller Christmas Village at Atwater Market until December 24.

Which is better to visit, Quebec or Montreal?+

For a Christmas market trip, it comes down to your dates. Québec City suits a Thursday-to-Sunday weekend before December 23. Montreal suits weekday visits from mid-December and anything between Christmas and New Year. They're about three hours apart by train, so you can do both.

Are the Montreal and Québec City Christmas markets free?+

Yes. Both the Québec City German Christmas Market and Montreal's Great Christmas Market are free to enter. You pay only for what you buy. Most stalls at the Québec City market take cards, but bring some cash.
