What an Amtrak gift card gets you
Beyond booking reserved-seat and unreserved rides, the same card covers business-class and Acela first-class upgrades, sleeping-car accommodations on long-distance routes, onboard cafe and dining-car purchases, and Amtrak Vacations packages. It works at Amtrak.com, the Amtrak app, station ticket counters, and Quik-Trak kiosks. Unlike a bank-issued Visa or Mastercard gift card, there are no activation or per-purchase fees, and the balance never drains from dormancy charges.
two formats:
- Physical card: Mailed in a card carrier. $25 to $500 per card via Amtrak.com.
- E-gift card: Emailed within minutes, redeemable online, in the Amtrak app, or read out at a ticket counter. $25 to $500 via Amtrak.com; $25 to $500 via Dyme. Can be saved to the Amtrak account for one-tap booking.
You can apply multiple Amtrak gift cards to a single booking, and combine a gift card with a credit card to cover any balance above the card value.
Where to buy: four channels compared
| Channel | Format | Denominations | Delivery | Discount | Adds on top |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best for MilesDyme | E-gift only | $25 – $500 | Instant | None | Dyme Miles + instant paperless delivery |
| Amtrak.com | Physical + e-gift | $25 – $500 | Instant / 7–10 days | None | — |
| Amtrak station ticket counter | Physical only | $25 – $500 | Immediate | None | — |
| Secondary marketplacesRaise, CardCash | Digital code | Varies | Instant to 24h | Occasional few percent below face | — |
Secondary-market discounts on travel cards are thin and rotate by supply. Verify the balance before you redeem.
Can I get a Amtrak gift card at a discount?
Mostly no. Amtrak gift cards are not stocked on Costco or supermarket gift-card racks, so there is no reliable multi-pack discount the way there is for retail brands. Dyme sells them at face value; the value-add is Dyme Miles and paperless delivery, not a face-value discount. The thin discount channels are:
- Secondary marketplaces (Raise, CardCash). Resold Amtrak cards from third parties occasionally list a few percent below face value, but travel-card supply is limited and listings come and go. Verify the balance before redeeming, since secondary sellers sometimes post cards with partial balances.
- Amtrak fare promotions. Amtrak runs frequent fare sales and companion-fare offers on Amtrak.com. These cut the ticket price, not the gift-card price, so a gift card bought at face value still benefits when you redeem it during a sale.
- Amtrak Guest Rewards points redemptions. Not a gift-card discount, but members can book some trips on points instead of cash, which functions as a separate savings path alongside a gift card.
The bigger combined return comes from the rewards stack below: your credit card, Amtrak Guest Rewards points earned when you redeem, and Dyme Miles on the purchase. Most buyers leave that money on the table.
How to stack rewards
Three rewards programs fire on a single Amtrak gift card purchase through Dyme.
Credit-card rewards
Your credit card earns rewards on the Dyme purchase.
Gift-card resellers typically code as MCC 5947; many cards exclude this MCC from travel category bonuses, so the purchase usually falls back to the base rate.
- Capital One Venture X: 2x miles on essentially every purchase, including gift cards
- Citi Double Cash: 2% back on everything (1% when you buy + 1% when you pay)
- Chase Sapphire Reserve: falls back to 1x on gift cards. The travel bonus applies to Amtrak booked directly, not to a gift-card reseller
- Amex Gold: falls back to 1x on gift cards. 4x dining and 4x groceries do not apply
Amtrak Guest Rewards
- Join cost: free
- Applies at: redemption
- Earning rate: 2 points per $1 spent on most Amtrak travel
- Reward threshold: points are redeemable for train travel with no fixed conversion published; award fares vary by route and demand
Guest Rewards does not earn on the gift card purchase. It earns on the ticket when you redeem the card, at the same rate as paying with cash or credit, provided you attach your member number to the booking.
Dyme Miles
- Base rate: 1 Mile for every dollar
- Special rate: 5 Miles per dollar
- Expiration: never
- Blackouts: none
- Redeem on: over 2 million hotels and 600 airline partners
$200 Amtrak e-gift on Dyme, paid with Citi Double Cash, redeemed by a Guest Rewards member
- Citi Double Cash: $4 back (2% of $200)
- Amtrak Guest Rewards at redemption: 400 points on a $200 fare (2 points per dollar)
- Dyme Miles on the purchase: 200 Miles (1 per dollar), or 1,000 on a special offer (5 per dollar)
Illustrative only. Card rates, brand-program terms, and Dyme Miles offers change and vary by member; figures above are examples, not a guarantee of value.

How to buy on Amtrak.com
- Go to Amtrak.com and open the gift cards page.
- Choose physical or e-gift, then pick a design and an amount from $25 to $500.
- Add to cart and check out. Amtrak does not run a member discount on gift cards, and Guest Rewards points do not accrue on gift-card purchases.
How to buy in store
Staffed Amtrak station ticket counters can sell gift cards in person at most major stations. Tell the agent the amount you want, pay with cash or credit, and walk out with the card. Availability varies by station, so call ahead at smaller or unstaffed stops where only a Quik-Trak kiosk is present.
Designs and personalization
Physical cards: Amtrak's standard branded card art, with seasonal and travel-themed options at certain times of year. A card carrier and a printed message are available at checkout.
E-gift cards: a small set of designs with a customizable subject line and a recipient message.
There is no co-branded or personalized card option for individual purchase. For bulk orders, see corporate ordering below.
Delivery and timing
- E-gift via Dyme: 1 to 60 minutes by email. Save it to the recipient's Amtrak account for booking.
- E-gift via Amtrak.com: 1 to 60 minutes by email.
- Physical via Amtrak.com: 7 to 10 business days standard. Expedited shipping available at checkout.
- Physical at a station counter: Immediate — walk out with the card where available.
Dyme does not mail physical cards. If you need a physical card in hand, Amtrak.com or a staffed station counter is the path.
Corporate and bulk buying
Amtrak runs a corporate and bulk gift-card program for businesses buying in volume, with custom amounts and invoicing for employee rewards or client gifts. Contact the Amtrak corporate gift-card team to set up an order.
