The Castro has only a handful of hotels, mostly small and independent, and all five here are within a 10-minute walk of Castro Muni Metro station. You're a short walk from the Castro Theatre, the GLBT Historical Society Museum and the neighborhood's bars and restaurants, and downtown is about 15 minutes away by train.

How we ranked these hotels

Hotels were selected from verified properties located within The Castro and compared using guest review scores, hotel category, and any documented sustainability initiatives.

We used the city's official neighborhood map, which counts Duboce Triangle as part of Castro/Upper Market, so The Willows Inn on 14th Street is included. We left out properties in adjacent neighborhoods such as the Mission District and Noe Valley, even when they appeared nearby on booking platforms.

Independent and boutique places far outnumber chain hotels here, and the list reflects that.

Planning your Castro stay

  • Book at least 6 weeks ahead for San Francisco Pride weekend in late June. Hotels across the area fill fast, and the Castro's small properties tend to go first.
  • The Castro Muni Metro station (K, L, M lines) is at the corner of Castro and Market streets. All five hotels on this list are within a 10-minute walk.
  • Castro Theatre hosts film festivals and live events year-round. Check its schedule before you book so you can time your stay around screenings that interest you.
  • The Castro Street Fair runs each October. Street closures affect parking and foot traffic on Castro Street between Market and 19th streets for the full day.

What to expect from hotels in The Castro

The Castro is a dense, walkable neighborhood where most hotels are small, independent, or boutique properties. There's no big convention hotel or full-service resort here, but you're close to everything: the Castro Muni Metro station puts downtown San Francisco about 15 minutes away by rail, and the neighborhood's bars, restaurants, and cultural sites are on foot from every hotel on this list.

Guest scores here run high for the star ratings: The Parker Guest House scores 9.6 and Becks Motor Lodge 9.0. A 2-star place in the Castro can out-score 3-star hotels elsewhere in the city.

None of the five hotels on this list carry a verified third-party sustainability certification such as LEED or Green Key. If eco credentials are a primary factor in your booking decision, we have a separate page for eco-friendly hotels in San Francisco that covers certified properties across the city.
