Stay in the Mission and you can walk to dinner on Valencia Street, the murals on 24th Street and an afternoon in Dolores Park. These five are independent hotels and guesthouses, and two of them, Inn San Francisco and Noe's Nest, score above 9. Hostels and unrated properties were excluded.
How we picked these hotels
Each hotel on this list had to clear three bars: a confirmed Mission District address, a verified guest rating above 6.0, and active bookability.
We ranked by sustainability credentials first, then star rating, then guest score. Two BART stations anchor the neighborhood, 16th Street Mission and 24th Street Mission, so walkability to rail was a secondary factor we checked for every address. Properties in adjacent neighborhoods like the Castro, Hayes Valley, or Noe Valley were excluded regardless of proximity.
We used the city's official neighborhood map for the boundary. It puts Noe's Nest on Guerrero Street inside the Mission, though the inn describes itself as between Noe Valley and the Mission.

What to expect from hotels in the Mission District
Most Mission District hotels run two to three stars, with pricing well below comparable rooms in Union Square or SoMa. Expect character over polish: many of these hotels are in Victorian or Edwardian buildings, and the neighborhood itself is louder and more active than quieter residential areas. You stay here for the restaurants and bars on your doorstep more than for the hotel itself.
If a pool or full-service spa matters to you, we have a separate page for hotels with pools that covers options across San Francisco.

None of the five hotels on this list carry a verified sustainability certification such as LEED or Green Key at this time. If eco-credentials are a priority, our eco-friendly boutique hotels page covers certified options across San Francisco.
Why stay in the Mission District?+
Mostly the food: the restaurants on Valencia Street, plus the 24th Street murals and Dolores Park. Staying in the neighborhood puts you within walking distance of some of the city's most-reviewed taquerias, wine bars, and bakeries, without the premium pricing of Union Square hotels.
